Living in Takoradi

Oil money, ocean air, and a city transforming

When offshore oil was discovered in 2007, Takoradi went from a sleepy port twin city to Ghana's energy capital. The change is visible: new hotels along Beach Road, gated compounds in Airport Ridge built for expat engineers, and a cost of living that has climbed steadily. The harbour still moves cocoa and timber, but now it also services oil rigs.

Airport Ridge is where the oil money lives — furnished apartments, swimming pools, generators that kick in when the grid falters. Rent here rivals central Accra. Anaji offers the middle ground: solid self-contained apartments, local markets within walking distance, and rents that let you save. Effia is the traditional neighbourhood — compound houses, community life, and the lowest rents in town.

Two-year advance payments are the norm, not the exception. Landlords here know the oil workers can afford it. If you are on a local salary, negotiate hard and consider Sekondi as an alternative.
